Socialism or Nationalism: The Greater Evil

April 11, 2017

Trump Hitler Nationalist

We keep hearing from those on the right the dangers of socialism. One example they love to use; Hitler was a socialist. Hitler's party, the National Socialist German Workers' Party, or NAZI for short, was in part based upon socialism. It was also based on one other key principal that the right conveniently ignores - nationalism.

Many of Trump's most ardent supporters are fierce nationalist. They believe that we need to secure our borders, put America first, and return our country to the way it once was. Trump echo's these very ideals.

Does this sound like anyone similar in history? Hitler made the same statements about Germany.

"Germany will either be a world power or will not be at all."

Should we build up the military now or later Mr. Trump? How about that $54 billion increase to the defense budget?

Hitler also said in Mein Kampf [pp. 293-296]

"The Jew's domination in the state seems so assured that now not only can he call himself a Jew again, but he ruthlessly admits his ultimate national and political designs. A section of his race openly owns itself to be a foreign people, yet even here they lie. For while the Zionists try to make the rest of the world believe that the national consciousness of the Jew finds its satisfaction in the creation of a Palestinian state, the Jews again slyly dupe the dumb Goyim."

"It doesn't even enter their heads to build up a Jewish state in Palestine for the purpose of living there; all they want is a central organization for their international world swindle, endowed with its own sovereign rights and removed from the intervention of other states: a haven for convicted scoundrels and a university for budding crooks."

Replacing Muslim or Mexican for Jew and we have a speech none of us would be surprised to hear Trump give.

Are we saying that Trump is Hitler, no. Instead, we hope these words will help enlighten our friends on the right. It wasn't socialism, but nationalism that led to the Holocaust.

Having established the dangers of nationalism, what then can we do to prevent WWIII from the nationalist movements amassing in the United States and abroad?

First, we must remain knowledgeable about national and world events. This means watching all sources of media, including Fox and MSNBC. At all cost we cannot allow President's Trump's lies regarding the media to fool us.

Hitler once said.

"If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed."

People are believing Trump's lie and disarming themselves of knowledge, turning off trusted news sources. Instead, they are listening to the President and his army of white nationalist propaganda machines led by Steve Bannon. Of course we are speaking of Breitbart, The Blaze, and Fox.

Second, we must show our neighbors that the majority of Muslims and Mexicans are good hard working people who want the same life we want. They want the opportunity to rise in economic class, leave a better future for their kids, and have freedom from persecution. They want to live the American dream.

Finally, we must make sure that Trump does not use a major disaster or war to gain more power. Timothy Snyder, eloquently provides 20 lessons in On Tyranny that demonstrate how dictators rise to power. Using disasters is a recurring theme with dictators. We recommend reading the book for the other 19 lessons.

In conclusion having national pride is not a bad ideal. However, when nationalism surpasses caring for others we tread into the black depths of hate. Tell your die-hard nationalist neighbors what they are really standing for. Explain to them that nationalism led to the Holocaust.

Undertake these actions and in the end we strongly believe that love will trump hate and the dangers of nationalism.
